Lau
Gar Kung fu ( Lau Gar Kuen - translation Lau Family Fist or Style) is a
Southern Shaolin Kung Fu System, which emphasises hand techniques
with great speed and accuracy as well as including a considerable
amount of kicking also. Lau Gar practitioners excel in
stick work. The classes taught by Sifu Steven Burton and his
staff are taught with the utmost professionalism and are taught in
a fun and enjoyable way. This system teaches self discipline,
strength, self esteem, team building and most of all a very
effective self defence system. As well as the traditional empty
hand routines (based on the Shaolin 5 animal systems, Snake,
Dragon, Leopard, Tiger & Crane), Lau Gar teaches traditional
weapons only at an advanced level to improve strength and
co-ordination of the individual. Lau Gar at an advanced level
teaches Internal and External Chi Kung (Breath or energy work),
this helps to strengthen the mind and body.
Shaolin 5 animals as they relate to Lau Gar Kuen
San Da Chinese Kickboxing is a fitness and
self defence system which incorporates sparing, grappling, ground
fighting and the use of pressure points. All this is done in a
street defence effective way. For those that are interested in
competitions, there is also a significant element designed for
those interested in the competitive side of kickboxing. This does
not mean that you have to compete, just enjoy the training for
whatever reason, i.e. health, self defence, etc.
Torite
Jutsu is not really technique specific except for the
purpose of teaching and illustrating the science of the art. For
example, the simple technique of centre lock is used in most
martial arts in one form or another. In this art instead of just
being a joint lock relying on physical pressure to execute, we use
the five element theory of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), to
perform the technique with much less effort. Where a joint lock
normally takes the pressure of the hand, our method uses the
pressure of two fingers.
Tai
Chi is best known as the form of exercise that has been
popularised by images of old Chinese people practising graceful
flowing movements in the park. These movements, now practised by
old and young alike throughout the world, are an important part of
Tai Chi systems. Tai Chi originates from China where it developed
as a martial art incorporating the principles of subduing the hard
with the soft and adapting and sticking to the opponents
movements. The tai chi classes are taught by Sifu Steven Burton,
who is an indoor student of Grandmaster Chen Zheng Lei, 11
generation Chen Tai Chi Grandmaster.
Traditional Lion Dance
Lion dancing is physically demanding requiring agility and,
when practiced at its highest form, acrobatic ability. Kung fu
clubs have long been associated with lion dancing as the lion
dance incorporates various kung fu derived stances, kicks and
other footwork in its routines. Of course kung fu practitioners
should also have the physical attributes required to manipulate
the heavy lion's head which can be surprisingly heavy and
difficult to use.
Even today the skill of the kung fu club's lion dancers serves
to show the club's spirit and the team's ability to perform an
impressive lion dance is a matter of pride and is taken very
seriously.
Chinese Lion Dance is usually associated with the Chinese New
Year celebration but is also performed at openings of new
businesses and various festivals.

Success for Life Programme
SFL is an exciting new children’s educational
programme at the cutting edge of character building and life
skills development taught through martial arts training.
Environment
With the environment ever changing our children are asked
to face more difficult challenges and increasing pressures
everyday. We all see and hear about the effects that school
violence; bullying, negative peer pressure and obesity have
on children. Martial arts schools teaching Success For Life
have a genuine interest in helping shape a positive future
for today's youth, the future leaders.
Objective
Success For Life was developed by Martial Arts
Instructors, elementary teachers and character education
experts, by working together they devised a Character
Education program that would help children make better
decisions for the future, become more self confident, and
develop into successful well rounded adults, and give
parents more peace of mind when it came to ensuring that
they chose the best education for their child.
Programme
We have created four martial arts heroes, each character
has a unique personality and design to help give children
the enthusiasm and motivation to succeed. A student's
character builds through the 12 life skills modules being
taught in their martial arts classes, these are supported at
home by parents and children participating together
completing child friendly, life skills checklists to
reinforce the skills learnt in class.
Once children have demonstrated the required effort and
conduct in and out of their martial arts schools they are
rewarded with certificates decorated with their favourite
martial arts heroes.
Martial Arts
Martial Arts training simply serves as a vehicle to
instil values and skills that children can put to use
outside of the Martial Arts School. Skills like:
Self-Confidence, Self-Control, and Positive Thinking;
Listening Skills, Respect and Good Manners. The Ability to
Focus Attention; Perseverance and Courage. The core of
martial arts stresses the vital importance of a healthy mind
and body necessary to lead a productive life.
The instructors teach their skills locally in
various schools in Hyndburn, Blackburn and the surrounding towns
as well as internationally.
The school has produced both regional and
international champions in many of its disciplines taught.
